The Beginning

2006 was my third season of tackle football. Until then, I had touched the ball 4 times in a game with little accomplishment. I was in for a big surprise. That year Oak Hall started a Middle School team. I was a 6th grader in spring and was set to be a starting receiver. I was playing with all my friends now, at my school, and with coaches I liked, and I was loving it. The last day of spring practice, our starting Quarterback decided he would rather play Golf, and quit the team. I didn’t think much of it, because we had a backup.

The first two days of summer practice were two of the most life-changing days of my life. The first day I was told that since we now only had one Quarterback, I was to be the back-up as a 7th grader while the starter was an eighth grader. The next day our starting QB decided he didn’t want to play that position anymore, and I was made the starting Quarterback. I had never played the position before, and had no idea what it was going to be like. I would go from never touching the ball, to having it in my hands on every single play.

I had no idea what I was doing, but I was excited about my new position. Our first game was against a team from Jacksonville called NFC (North Florida Christian). They were big, they were fast, they were strong, and they were good. We got absolutely whipped, and I took quite a few beatings from their defensive linemen. It was not a good start to the season, but we got a game under our belts.

Our one victory on the season was against Bronson. We played a great game, marching down the field, and refusing to let them do the same. Not only did we come home with a win, but we mutilated them. It was a thrilling experience for the whole group, as most of our team had never been in such a situation before. The next year would be much different for me, and not much different for my team here at Oak Hall, as I moved to St. Louis for my eighth grade season.
